Description
This versatile function block controls a forward/reverse drive with integrated object counting, runtime recording, obstacle detection and automatic maintenance request.
It was developed in Structured Control Language (SCL) and can be used directly in the Siemens TIA Portal – a reliable solution for numerous conveyor and handling applications.

Note: All modules are designed exclusively as a learning and optimization basis and are not approved for live operation. System modules, in particular, must be finally tested and commissioned by qualified personnel before productive use.

How it works
Inputs for start , stop , direction change and sensor exit are processed via edge detection.
Each time an object exits, the object counter automatically increases by one.
A finite state machine (FSM) controls the direction of movement and prioritizes safety states such as stop or obstacle detection .
The runtime module counts the active operating time of the drive every second.
If the runtime exceeds the specified maintenance limit, a maintenance request is triggered.

Technical details
Edge detection is performed via standard triggers for all relevant inputs.
In the idle state, the FSM remains in the presence of active stop or obstacle signals.
Otherwise, the controller automatically switches to forward or reverse mode.
Outputs for motor and signal lamps are clearly set – to indicate operation and fault.
A TON timer with a one-second cycle time counts the operating time.
If the defined limit is reached, the maintenance request switches to TRUE .

Possible applications
The module is ideal for simulating conveyor belts, positioning drives, logistics units or sorting stations.
Thanks to integrated object counting, throughput and production can be easily recorded.
Obstacle detection increases safety in automated operation.
In training courses or simulations, FSM logic demonstrates practical topics such as control logic, safety and maintenance strategies.

compatibility
Runs on Siemens S7-1200 and S7-1500 controllers.
Developed for TIA Portal version V13 and higher – V16 or higher is recommended for optimal compatibility with current simulation tools such as PLCSIM.
