Automatic paper cutting

Description

This function block handles the complete control of a continuous material feed with subsequent cutting process – fully automatically according to a preset length. The code, written in SCL, is ready for use directly in the Siemens TIA Portal, providing automatic control and precise process control in a single compact module.

Note: All modules are designed exclusively as a learning and optimization basis and are not approved for live operation. System modules, in particular, must be finally tested and commissioned by qualified personnel before productive use.

How it works

As always, safety comes first: Has the emergency stop or stop button been pressed? ⇒ Immediate stop of the feed motor and cutting actuator, an alarm is triggered, and the cycle returns to step 0 .

In automatic mode, the process runs as follows:

1. Material detected & start button pressed?
   → The feed motor starts.
2. Actual length reached target length?
   → Motor stops, cutting valve is activated for 300 ms.
3. After cutting pulse:
   → Cutting is stopped, the length measurement is reset.

The next feed cycle starts immediately.

Technical details

• Security logic:
  Emergency stop and stop buttons have priority and switch everything off immediately.
• Cycle control:
  Controlled by a stepper machine (FSM) with counter.
• Cutting pulse:
  Is output via a TON timer with a duration of 300 ms.
• Length reset:
  The reset signal for the actual length is only set for one cycle – directly after the cut.
• Outputs:
  All actuators output clear TRUE/FALSE signals, ideal for motor, valve or status display.
